Plains gives mixed reviews to McCaleb

APRIL 19, 2001 Tribal leaders in the Plains are giving mixed reviews to Neal McCaleb, President Bush's pick to head the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Arlyn Headdress, chairman of Montana's Fort Peck Reservation, said persons like McCaleb have no idea what is like to live on a reservation. Headdress questioned his support of large, land-based tribes since McCaleb is Chickasaw, whose nation has no reservation. George Eagleman, a representative of the United Sioux Tribes, said the organization had endorsed someone from the Plains to run the BIA. Get the Story:
