Budget cuts suggested under Ashcroft

FEBRUARY 9, 2001 The Washington Post reports today that the Department of Justice under Attorney General John Ashcroft is due for a $1 billion cut in its budget. Increasing costs at the Bureau of Prisons and Immigration and Nauturalization Services are cited as reasons to slice the budget. That could mean reduction in funds for the FBI and the Drug Enforcement Administration, as well as job cuts. Some Indian Country critics of Ashcroft fear offices dedicated to tribal justice that departed AG Janet Reno founded will go ignored or underfunded. In a letter to the Office of Management and Budget, Ashcroft argued against budget cuts but the Washington Post says his staff is looking at ways to cut funding in certain areas. Get the Story:
