JANUARY 4, 2001 Hillary Clinton made history on Wednesday, becoming the first First Lady in history to be elected to Congress. Along with other freshman Senators, Clinton was officially sworn-in to the 107th Congress. The Senate now includes a total of 13 women, including Maria Cantwell (D-Wash), who defeated Slade Gorton in November. The Senate is also evenly split between Democrats and Republicans. Vice President-elect Dick Cheney will serve as President of the Senate, casting any tie-breaking votes. Get the Story:
