State GOP continues fights

JANUARY 10, 2001 Reeling from the loss of several Republican candidates, including former Senator Slade Gorton, the Washington State Republican Party has been involved in a power dispute since the election. Critics blame Chairman Don Benton for the losses, saying he withheld money that could have been used on campaigns. Several party members are hoping to unseat him as leader. The Republican National Committee is currently auditing the state party's financial records as a result. Benton also tried to get criminal charges filed against a member of the Republican National Committee for taping a state party meeting. But county police say his claims of illegal taping were unfounded. Get the Story:
