N.Y. raising cigarette tax

MONDAY, APRIL 1, 2002 In what is expected to be a boon for tribes, the state of New York is raising its cigarette tax to 39 cents per pack this week. Tribes and reservation retailers have long benefited from the tax-free benefits of sovereignty. In New York, unlike elsewhere, the state doesn't force them to remit tax on good sold to non-Indians. When the new tax goes into effect Wednesday, a pack of cigarettes will be about 43 percent cheaper on the reservation. Online retailers are also exempt from the hike. Get the Story:
