Poor counties home to two reservations

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 20, 2001 A county in New Mexico encompassing a significant portion of the Navajo Nation and nearly all of Zuni Pueblo is one of the poorest in the nation, according to Census Bureau figures being released today. In terms of children living below the poverty level, McKinley County ranks third, with 48.8 percent in poverty. In terms of overall population, the county ranks 12th, with 37.4 below the poverty line. In neighboring Utah, San Juan County, which also includes part of the Navajo Nation, is the state's poorest. Child poverty was 24.8 percent and overall was 25.6 percent.
/p> Poverty is defined as a family of four with an income of $17,650 or less.
