White House wants $5B airline bailout

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 2001 Although airline executives wanted much more, the White House has sent to Congress a $5 billion cash package to aid the failing industry. Already suffering due to the slumping economy, airlines have been among the hardest hit by last week's terrorist attacks. But while they asked for $12.5 billion in guarantees and $5 billion in cash, the Bush administration has agreed only to the cash proposal. Of a separate anti-terrorism / recovery $40 billion package, Bush will pledge $3 billion to airplane and airport security. Airlines have laid off 100,000 workers recently. Get the Story:
