Cherokee group wants recognition casino

JULY 5, 2000 A group calling themselves the Southern Cherokee Nation wants federal recognition so they can legally operate a casino boat which they already sailed up the South Carolina coast. According to leader Gary Ridge, investors for the tribe have paid $7 million for the boat and 120 acres of land to be used a future reservation and theme park. A second gaming boat is on its way to the Arkansas River in Oklahoma, worrying the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma. Get the Story:
