Pequot Tribe biggest taxpayer

MARCH 28, 2001 The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation is the top taxpayer in the Connecticut town of North Stonington, paying $20 million in taxes in 2000. The tribe and its business are tops on the towns "grand list," a list of all taxable properties. The next highest taxpayer was Analysis & Technology Inc., who at $4.1 million trailed far behind the tribe local leaders have criticized for taking land into trust and off tax rolls. The tribe is seeking a re-evaluation of 26 properties it owns in the town. The tribe says it is paying double on those particular properties. Get the Story:
