MARCH 26, 2001 Nearly a year after the largest gaming company in the world first announced its intention to partner with the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe of New York, the pair finally filed its application to open a casino in the economically-depressed Catskills. An application for the off-reservation casino was filed on Friday with the Department of Interior. After a three-year wait, the tribe had received approval to build a casino in the area but with another developer and a different location than the one they are now asking the government take into trust for them. The casino would compete with tribally-owned ones in Connecticut and non-tribally owned ones in New Jersey. Donald Trump has opposed the casino and paid for a racially-tinged anti-Mohawk campaign last year for which eventually apologized. The Albany Times-Union confirmed with Stockbridge Munsee Chairman Robert Chicks that the Wisconsin tribe wants to negotiate with the state of New York on a casino in the Catskills as well.
