Tribes' casinos to remain open

OCTOBER 4, 2000 The four tribes who operate casinos in Kansas won't be affected by the failure of the state legislature to renew the lottery, said the chairman of the House Federal and State Committee. Under the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA) of 1988, the tribes can offer the same types of games permitted in the state. The lottery and horse and dog racing is permitted by the state's constitution. Only a repeal of the particular provisions of the constitution can affect Indian gaming, says Powell. Simply not reauthorizing either doesn't affect the tribes' casinos. Get the Story:
