SEPTEMBER 26, 2000

In a special joint session between the Senate Commitees on Intelilgence and Judiciary, Attorney General Janet Reno and FBI Director Louis Freeh were criticized for their handling of the Wen Ho Lee case.

Senators accused the goverment of handling the case poorly from the beginning, saying that Lee was pressured to enter a guilty plea with coercive tactics. Freeh, known in Indian Country, for defending the continued imprisonment of Leonard Peltier, said the plea was the best way to protect national security and rejected the idea that Lee was singled out because of his race.
