THURSDAY, AUGUST 30, 2001 University of South Dakota researchers are beginning a study to determine whether Native Americans are unfairly treated by the justice system in the state. A public hearing was held in Wednesday in Sioux Falls to get input on their work. Although attendance was minimal, an organizer said the discussion was productive. The researchers will be looking at data from more than 170,000 arrests from 1994 and 1999. They will also look at prosecuction data. A preliminary report is expected by November with a final one issued in January or February of next year. Get the Story:
