Pequot Tribe seeks recognition delay

TUESDAY, AUGUST 28, 2001 The Eastern Pequot Tribe of Connecticut last week asked a federal court to give researchers more time to respond to comments submittted on its federal recognition petition. The tribe wants 60 days to respond to voluminous comments submitted by third parties including the state of Connecticut. Under federal regulations, 60 days is the normal response time, pointed out chairwoman Marcia Jones Flowers, but a court has limited responses to 30 days. The state is opposing the delay unless the tribe submits its documentation to Attorney General Richard Blumenthal. Assistant Secretary Neal McCaleb is to make a final decision in December on whether the tribe and the Paucatuck Easten Pequot Tribe deserve federal recognition. Get the Story:
