THURSDAY, AUGUST 2, 2001 Researchers at Harvard University have taken a stab at resolving the jurisdictional disputes between the Nez Perce Tribe of Idaho and local communities. Through public surveys and informational meetings, the school is hoping to understand the issues behind the dispute. They hope their research will help tribal and local leaders break an impasse on their differences. Local communities have aligned themselves against the tribe on taxation, water rights and treaty rights issues. They claim the reservation has been diminished but the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled otherwise. The Supreme Court earlier this year declined to hear the case. Get the Story:
