Pequot Tribe foes to meet again

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 1, 2001 The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and three Connecticut towns will again meet this month to discuss their dispute over trust land. The August 20 meeting with be the third between the tribe and the towns. Freshman Congressman Rob Simmons (R-Conn.) has been brokering the discussions. The towns and the state oppose the tribe's attempt to seek additional trust lands. The 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals last fall ruled against the state in a lawsuit over 165 acres of land, however. Nevertheless, the tribe has offered to limit future land-into-trust applications to 880 acres for the next 35 years. Get the Story:
