TUESDAY, JULY 10, 2001 In a letter to Rep. Rob Simmons (R-Conn.), Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Chairman Kenneth Reels is proposing to meet with three Connecticut towns on August 20 but town leaders want to meet sooner. The meeting would be the third between the tribe and the towns of Ledyard, North Stonington and Preston. The parties are discussing a disagreement over trust land. The towns have opposed attempts by the tribe to seek trust status for lands. The tribe appears willing to set a limit, for now, on the amount of trust land it will seek, but hasn't defined it. The tribe has prevailed in court with a recent appeals court decision which said the Department of Interior could not be prevented from taking additional land into trust for them. Get the Story:
