Man wants to be tried under tribal jurisdiction

TUESDAY, JULY 10, 2001 An African-American man accused of hitting Seattle Mayor Paul Schell in the face with a bullhorn was removed from court on Monday after trying to get his case removed to a tribal court. James C. Garrett was trying to explain his reasons for wanting to be tried by a tribe, said his public defender. But after disobeying a judge's orders not to make political speeches, he was removed by jail officers. At the time of the alleged incident this past Saturday, Garrrett was protesting the shooting death of Aaron Roberts, an African-American motorist killed by a police officer. Get the Story:
