MAY 9, 2000 13 tribes in Arizona and New Mexico consider the San Francisco Peaks to be sacred to their culture and way of life. A new proposal would protect the northern Arizona mountain from mining. The Coconino National Forest officials have recommended that the mountain be withdrawn under the 1872 Mining Law. If the supervisor approves the recommendation, Secretary of Interior Bruce Babbitt will make the final approval. Get the Story:
