MAY 8, 2000 The Connecticut towns of North Stonington, Preston, and Ledyard are threatening to sue Secretary of Interior Bruce Babbitt if he does not intervene in the federal recognition process of two tribes that have received preliminary approval. The towns sent a 24-page letter to Babbitt on Friday questioning the decision to grant the Eastern Pequots and the Paucatuck Eastern Pequots approval. The towns also allege BIA director Kevin Gover has a conflict of interest since he represented the Golden Hill Paugussetts, a state recognized tribe, in their bid for federal recognition.
