DOJ seeks dismissal of land-into-trust suit

MAY 25, 2001 Pokagon Potawatomi Chairman John Miller on Wednesday said the Department of Justice has filed a motion in federal court seeking to dismiss a land-into-trust challenge brought by residents in New Buffalo Township, Michigan. The Department of Interior agreed to take 675 acres of land into trust for the tribe. The tribe hopes to build a casino on the land. The tribe was federally recognized by Congress in 1994.
