Tribe gets new chairman

DECEMBER 5, 2000 The Potawatomi Tribe of Kansas inaugurated Badger Wahwasuck as its new chairman on Monday. One of nine candidates considered for the position, Wahwasuck was chosen by the tribal council to replace former chairwoman Mamie Rupnicki. Rupnicki resigned in October amid allegations of abuse of power. Wahwasuck said he is eager to expand economic development on the tribe's reservation. The tribe operates a casino. He also said he wants to keep his door open to tribal members. Get the Story:
