Gov. Ventura opposes trust status

DECEMBER 22, 2000 Minnesota Governor Jesse Ventura on Thursday released a letter he wrote to the BIA stating his opposition to the taking of 776 acres of land into trust for the the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community. Ventura says the decision, which will be made by Bureau of Indian Affairs officials in Washington, DC, will hurt local governments and citizens. Previous Governor Arne Carlson had opposed the tribe's first attempt to take the land into trust. The regional BIA office turned down the request in 1998. Get the Story:
