Former Pueblo officer pleads guilty

DECEMBER 14, 2000 Fabian Mascarenas, the former police chief of Picuris Pueblo, on Wednesday pleaded guilty in federal court in New Mexico to a misdemeanor violation of a teenager's civil rights. Mascarenas was accused by the government of roughing up Michael Segura at the Pueblo's tribal offices. Mascarenas had taken Segura and others there to question them about a theft from a Pueblo store. As part of the plea deal, Mascarenas will give up his law enforcement certifications and not seek future credentials. Sentencing is scheduled for January 5 and Mascarenas would receive six months of home detention and six months of probation. Get the Story:
