Pequot petitions call for investigation

NOVEMBER 24, 2000 Two petitions being circulated online and in Connecticut call for Congressional investigation into the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and two other Pequot tribes. One calls for investigation into the 1983 Mashantucket Pequot Settlement Act, which granted the tribe federal recognition and settled their land claims. It also calls for investigation into the current tribal membership's genealogy. The other calls for the withdrawal of the preliminary federal recognition of the Eastern Pequot and Paucatuck Eastern Pequot Tribes. The petition alleges conflict of interest within the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The petitions are intended to be sent to Congress. Get the Story:
