FRIDAY, OCTOBER 5, 2001 A federal judge in Connecticut on Thursday heard oral arguments in a case challenging the legitimacy of the Mohegan Tribe of Connecticut. A group calling itself the Native American Mohegan Tribe says it should be entitled to federal recognition. The group wants a share of the Mohegan Sun casino profits and other benefits. The federal government and the Mohegan Tribe say the group missed its chance to challenge the federal status. They want U.S. District Judge Janet B. Arterto to dismiss the case. The state of Connecticut also wants the case dismissed. The state is worried about legal claims the Native American Mohegan group could raise if recognized. Get the Story:
