OCTOBER 20, 2000 The Missisquoi Abenaki of Vermont lost a bid to protect a burial ground before the state's environmental board. The tribe tried to prevent construction of homes at a site in Highgate under a state law. They said the Division of Historic Preservation should have been notified when artifacts were found at the site and that they needed more time to protect it. The tribe was able to convince a superior court to issue a temporary ban on digging wells and septic systems but not on construction. Get the Story:
