OCTOBER 11, 2000 An anti-Indian treaty rights group is urging the overturn of land claims decisions favoring the Cayuga Nation of New York. The group, Upstate Citizens for Equality. has distributed petitions to county, state, and federal officials calling for a reconsideration of decisions made by US District Court Judge Neal McCurn. McCurn ruled that the tribe is entitled to compensation for 64,000 acres of land illegaly transferred to the state. A jury in February ruled the land was worth $36.9 million and McCurn is considering whether or not to add interest to the award. The group also opposes rulings favoring the Oneida Nation.
