SEPTEMBER 29, 2000

A book scheduled for publication in November alleges that scientists in the United States conducted experiments which led to the deaths of hundreds or thousands of Yanomami, who live in the Amazon Forest in South America.

James V. Neel, a University of Michigan geneticist, and his colleagues innoculated members of the tribe with a measles vaccine. They said it was intended to stop a measles epidemic.

But author Patrick Tierney says the the vaccine initiated the disease, instead of preventing it.
