Fujimori to leave office

SEPTEMBER 18, 2000

In a move which is surprising everyone, President Alberto Fujimori of Peru announced he would leave his country's highest office.

Fujimori announced his departure in a national address last night. He called for new elections to be held soon.

Alejandro Toledo, who ran against Peru in April, announced he would run again, hoping to be the country's first Indian leader. Amid allegations of tampering, Fujimori barely won the election.

Analysts are linking Fujimori's departure to dwindling support from the military. Fujimori had been pressed by the international community to institute governmental reforms.
