OCTOBER 26, 2000

New elections for President in Peru have been scheduled for next April.

The election is being held because the current President, Alberto Fujimori, has decided to step down. The country has been in a political crisis for the past several months, from disputes over the electoral process to one over the country's elusive spy chief, Vladimiro Montesinos.

Alejandro Toledo, hoping to be the country's first Indian President, said he will run in the election next year. He dropped out of the run-off election in May, alleging election fraud.
