Zapatista leader: Take off your mask
TUESDAY, OCTOBER 16, 2001

Zapatista leader Subcomandante Marcos will be allowed to enter Honduras if he takes off his ski mask and has a Mexican passport, the Associated Press reports today.

Honduras immigration officials in Tegucigalpa, the capital, told the AP they are more than willing to accept the Indian rights leader if he adheres to their conditions. Marcos, however, doesn't appear to have a Mexican passport.

Also, he has never been seen in public without his mask. Besides, a spokesperson for the Zapatistas says that Marcos probably won't be going to Honduras for an Indian rights conference, despite claims made by event organizers.

Marcos' identity has been subject of rumor since January 1, 1994, the day Zapatistas led an Indian revolt in the southern state of Chiapas in Mexico. Some sources say he is a former university professor who is part Indian.
