The Kickapoo Tribe of Kansas and the city of Horton are teaming up to create the first tribal-local drug court in the country.

The two governments plan to apply for a drug court grant through the US Department of Justice. They will spend at least the next nine months working together to develop a plan for the drug court.

Nationwide, drug courts are employed to cure drug and alcohol abuse, rather than incarcerate addicts. Many addicts are repeat offenders.

This year, the DOJ awarded 44 grants to tribes and Alaska Native Villages through the drug court program. The program began in 1994.
