JULY 2, 2001

By a vote of 59 to 36, the Senate on Friday approved a patients' rights bill pushed by Democrats.

The bill includes provisions opposed by President Bush and some Republicans who say it will lead to more lawsuits. During two weeks of debate, Republicans failed to make substantial changes to it amid a threat of a Presidential veto.

Voting in favor were 50 Democrats and 9 Republicans. Voting against were 35 Republicans and one Independent. Five Republicans did not cast a vote.

The bill will go on to the House for consideration.
