The House on Thursday approved a bill making it a separate federal crime to harm a fetus during an attack on a woman.

Called the Unborn Victims of Violence Act, it received a vote of 252 to 172 yesterday. Its sponsors say it is one of several abortion-related bills they will seek to pass now that President Bush is in the White House.

In a statement, President Bush welcomed the act's passage.
