Bio-corn found in supply

OCTOBER 25, 2000

A genetically modified corn product not meant for human consumption has been found in the supply of at least one grain shipper.

The product, known as StarLink, was found mixed in with standard corn at a farm in Iowa. StarLink's producer sent the corn to many suppliers but they say they weren't alerted not to mix the corn.

The company has admitted it should have been more careful in alerting suppliers. They also say their acceptance of approval of the corn by the Food and Drug Administration for animal consumption only was a mistake.

The corn doesn't pose any immediate health risks, says the FDA. But it could lead to allergic reactions.
