Safeway taco shells recalled

OCTOBER 12, 2000

The Safeway supermaket has announced a recall of its own brand of taco shells because they contain genetically engineering corn not approved for consumption by humans.

Samples of the store's taco shells were sent to a genetic testing company. One of the samples was found to contain a genetically modified corn produced by a company called Aventis CropScience.

The Environmental Protection Agency has not approved the modified corn for human use because they say it could cause allergies. It is approved for animal use.

The taco shells were supplied to 1,680 stores. In addition to the store brand, Safeway is recalling taco shells made by Mission Foods because that company produced the Safeway taco shells.

Another company, Kraft Foods, issued a recall of its Taco Bell brand taco shells. Consumers who have purchased Taco Bell brand products should not eat them and can return them to stores for a refund.
