SEPTEMBER 6, 2000 The Maritime Fishermen's Union, a group of non-Native fisherman, is calling for a moratorium on lobster fishing while the federal government and the Burnt Church First Nation attempt to come to an agreement on the regulation of treaty rights in New Brunswick. The group says they approached Mi'kmaq fishermen last year after violence erupted between non-Natives and Natives. But one Mi'kmaq said the group wanted the bands to sign an agreement dictating their fishing rights. The group also criticized the media and accused certain members of the media for taking sides in the dispute. Get the Story:
