THURSDAY, MARCH 14, 2002 With the help of federal funding under a flood law, the pow-wow grounds of the Meskwaki Tribe of Iowa will be saved from erosion, the Associated Press reports. The tribe's 145-year-old grounds have been in danger as the Iowa River inches closer to the area. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers plans to fortify the river banks with concrete mats to prevent further damage. The project is expected to cost $840,000, of which the tribe will pay about 35 percent. The rest comes from money under the 1946 Flood Control Act.
