Norton wants even more reform

TUESDAY, DECEMBER 11, 2001 Secretary of Interior Gale Norton is calling on Congress to make more reforms to her department's policies. The changes are not about the Bureau of Indian Affairs' trust responsibilities, however, for which her department feels Congress deserves little notification. She is seeking an update of an 1872 mining law that has been used to shut down mining on sacred sites. If an update occurs, royalty payments to governments are considered to be a big issue. Environmentalists also want to make sure any changes don't damage the land. Get the Story:
