Timber lobbyist named to forest post

JUNE 22, 2001 President Bush on Thursday nominated Mark Edward Rey to be Undersecretary for Natural Resources and Environment in the US Department of Agriculture. Rey is a former lobbyist to the timber and paper industry. He had held top positions for American Forest and Paper Association, the American Forest Resource Alliance, and the National Forest Products Association. Rey is currently a staff member of the Energy and Natural Resources Committee, working for Sens. Frank Murkowski (R-Alaska) and Larry Craig (R-Idaho). Rey would oversee the US Forest Service, whose roadless forest initiative is the subject of numerous lawsuits and departmental review. Get the Story:
