Battle brews over suckerfish

JUNE 20, 2001 Secretary of Interior Gale Norton is being asked by farmers in Oregon and Republican lawmakers to convene the "God Squad," a little used but powerful committee which makes decisions on endnagered species. The purpose of the Endangered Species Committee, made up of seven abinet-level officials, would be to weigh protections of the suckerfish against the farmers' need for water. A federal judge has ordered water cut off from about 1,400 famers in order to protect the endangered fish. Get the Story:
