State doesn't want elk shipped to tribe

MAY 4, 2001 Citing environmental concerns, the state of Montana on Wednesday obtained a temporary order barring a couple from shipping its herd of game elk to the Crow Tribe. The couple had already given 68 elk to the tribe before the order was obtained. The state's livestock agency says it doesn't oppose the tribe receiving the herd but have raised questions on how they will be kept on the reservation and how they are being transferred. The Bureau of Indian Affairs and US Fish and Wildlife approved the elk transfer, said a tribal spokesperson. A local wildlife group opposes the gift. Get the Story:
