MAY 30, 2001 Senator Frank Murkowski (R-Alaska) on Tuesday said he is not going to give up the fight to open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil and gas development, despite losing his chairmanship of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee to a drilling opponent. Murkowski says statements about ANWR being dead are not valid. He told reportrs that drilling there is "right for America." Murkowski will hand the reins over to Jeff Bingaman (D-N.M.).
