Babbitt recommends Pueblo monument

JANUARY 5, 2000 Secretary of Interior Bruce Babbitt on Thursday recommended that the Tent Rocks State Park in New Mexico be declared a national monument. Parts of the park are considered sacred by Cochiti Pueblo. The Pueblo and the Bureau of Land Management jointly manage the park. Visitors travel on Pueblo roads to get to it. Babbitt visited the park in December and was impressed with it, as well as the joint management plan. The Pueblo and Senator Jeff Bingaman (D-N.Mex) had asked Babbitt to recommend the site to President Clinton but Senator Pete Domenici (R-N.Mex) had raised some concerns.
