DECEMBER 1, 2000 In order to protect endangered species, the Army Corps of Engineers has agreed in principle to a plan that alters water flows on the Missouri River. The plan involves raising water levels, the creation or restoration of habitats along the river, and the rotation of water levels on three reservoirs. The plan was suggested by the US Fish and Wildlife Service and a draft is expected next summer. In response to the plan, Mike Jandreau, Chairman of the Lower Brule Tribe of South Dakota, said the plan will help restore the river to its natural state. Get the Story:
