JANUARY 12, 2001 Two committees of the Montana state legislature voted on Thursday to oppose the designation of the Missouri River Breaks a natinal monument. But one lawmaker who voted against the resolution objected to language which made it seem like Lewis and Clark were the first who explored the region. Rep. Carol Juneau said it overshadowed the state's Native people. Montana Governor Judi Martz and other officials have opposed the designation of the Breaks and Pompeys Pillar, both of which have ties to Lewis and Clark. Secretary of Interior Bruce Babbitt made both recommendations last month. Get the Story:
