SEPTEMBER 26, 2000 Most University of North Dakota students who attended a forum held on Monday night voiced opposition to keeping the school's "Fighting Sioux" nickname. The nickname was changed in 1930 from the Flickertails to the Fighting Sioux. But the name was deemed not tough enough. A Lakota student said the mascot was equivalent to calling a Mexican immigrant a "wetback." But a Cherokee student said she was not offended by it, because she took pride in herself. Senator Aaron Krauter (D-N.Dakota), whose district includes the Standing Rock Reservation, co-sponsored a resolution in 1999, urging the school to change the logo. It wasn't approved, however, and Krauter said the change should be up to the school, not Congress. Get the Story:
