Indian names debated in N.Y. schools

Like educational institutions throughout the country, high schools in New York City and Long Island, are grappling with a request by the State education commissioner to get rid of all Indian nicknames or mascots as soon as possible.

Fourteen schools in New York City and Long Island have Indian mascots. Each school is reviewing how it will address the issue.

The Shinnecock Nation, a state-recognized tribe, has called for the names to be changed as well.
