Report: Mistrust over burial grounds

APRIL 11, 2001 The Minnnesota Office of the Legislative Auditor on Tuesday released a report on Tuesday citing a "high level of mistrust" between the state's archaeology department and the Indian Affairs Council over burial grounds. The report says the State Archaeologist and the council often disagree on how to locate sacred sites. It recommends legislation to require the parties to submit to dispute resolution when problems arise. The report, however, says three-fourths of tribal leaders say they have a "fair to good" relationship with the archaeology office. There are 11 tribes in the state. Get the Report:
